How many of us know that feeling of a static electricity shock? Although its annoying, we don’t usually worry too much about it. Are there any situations though, when static electricity could be more than just a nuisance?
Static shocks themselves are not usually very dangerous. This is because the current is usually pretty low. There are, however, some circumstances when static electricity might prove to be quite hazardous.
If there is an environment where flammable vapors or dust are present, static could cause them to ignite, or explode.
Were you aware that static from someone using electronic equipment can actually affect the equipment being used? It has even been known to erase a computers hard drive.
If someone quickly recoils from a static electric shock while doing some kind of task like carrying hot liquid etc, injury could easily be caused.
What measures can you take to prevent static shocks?
Wearing natural fibers instead of synthetic materials can reduce static shocks. Anti static wrist bands are also a option.
A humidifier is a good option as it stops the air from being too dry. Keep a few more plants in the home, as these also act as natural humidifiers.
Fabric softener is another good way of reducing static. Why not try spraying a diluted mixture of it lightly onto your carpet to reduce static build up.
So to summarize, while static electricity is normally just a nuisance, under certain conditions, there is a possibility it can become a hazard. It’s always a good idea to be aware of these conditions.
